Yes, the Trust helps make their dreams come true: The Maulana Abul Kalam Azad Educational Trust was established in 2001 at a time when Dharavi in Mumbai faced an acute dearth of educational facilities for the growing number of children. The government hardly paid any attention to the needs of local people and only two poorly managed senior secondary schools and a few primary schools are in operation under the government set ups, which have unsatisfactory standards. HOW IT STARTED

MAULANA ABUL KALAM AZAD EDUCATIONAL TRUST was established in 2001 by an educated and noble group of social workers with a wide range of philanthropic support. It was the time when an emerging Muslim locality at dharavi in Mumbai faced an acute dearth of educational facilities for the growing number of children. Even today recognized primary schools in the area are just seven in number, whereas a few other schools are providing similar facilities but without any government recognition.

Most of these schools fail to get proper recognition and registration by authorities due only to one deficiency, i.e. the lack of proper infrastructure. This speaks of a dire need of educating a large population of the area in the age group of 6-18 years on the one hand and on the other of the lack of resources at the disposal of local organizations to do so.Being a Muslim concentration area, the government and the officials hardly pay an adequate attention to the civil needs of local people and only two poorly managed senior secondary schools and a few primary schools are in operation under the government set ups.

However, these set ups are not preferred by the parents because of their unsatisfactory standards. from various faculties of higher education runs two schools which failed to achieve reputation of good institutions in contrast to the university’s repute as a seat of higher learning.

The growing number of unrecognized schools in the area and the shooting number of children being sent to schools far away from the area substantially justify effort and social investment for fulfilling the acute need of the local community. In this backdrop the significance of the project could be understood well. The school to be enhanced under this project is already having a good standing as one of the precursors of similar schools in the locality and it needs to be supported for it is an evermore utility towards the educationally backward community which dwells here.
